Whisnand Red Angus Farm EPD Definitions
BW
- Birth Weight (The weight of a calf taken within 24 hours after birth. Calf weight at birth is adjusted to a mature dam equivalent. This value is reported in pounds. The EPD value predicts the difference in average birth weight of a calf compared to calves of all other evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average birth weights while a negative value indicates lighter-than-average birth weights.) [back]
WW
- Weaning Weight (A sire, dam, or heifer's expected progeny difference in (lbs) for 205-day yearling weight. This simply means that this cow's progeny Weaning Weight should be an average of this value, greater or smaller than others of similar traits. The WW EPD is an indication of growth from birth to weaning.) [back]
YW
- Weight (A sire, dam, or heifer's expected progeny difference in (lbs) for 365-day yearling weight. This means that this cow's progeny Yearling Weight should be an average of this value, greater or smaller than others of similar traits. The YW EPD is a measure of growth from birth to a year of age.) [back]
M
- Milk (The expected difference, due to milk production alone, in the weaning weight of calves from the daughter of a bull or cow compared to calves from daughters of bulls or cows with a zero EPD for milk. Milk EPD values are measured in pounds of calf weaned and indicate milking ability.) [back]
TM
- Total Maternal (The weaning weight of a daughters' calves. Expected progeny performance is reported in pounds. This EPD value predicts the difference in average 205-day weight of daughters' calves compared from daughters of all other bulls or dams evaluated. The evaluation reflects both the maternal ability of daughters and the growth potential of their calves.) [back]
S
- Stayability (The expressed difference in probability of daughters staying in the herd to at least six years of age. Since cows are usually only culled for being open before six years, this EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in the female offall.) [back]
